Description

The Newton MessagePad 130 was originally announced on March 14, 1996. It was Apple’s fifth generation of the Newton devices and featured a 20 MHz ARM 610 processor 2.5MB of RAM. Most notably, it was the first Newton device with an on-demand backlit screen. The MessagePad 130 runs Newton OS 2.0 which offers better handwriting recognition, auto-expanding text macros, a faster Connection Kit for backup to Mac and PC, and an Ink Text capability that added cut-and-paste and word-wrap to unconverted handwritten text.  It also featured the Intelligent Assistant, which was a sort of proto-Siri that parsed written commands. Aside from these features, the Newton allowed users to communicate by fax, paging, or infrared beaming.  Users could browse the internet, connect to their personal computers, track finances, take notes, and use a variety of other apps. The Newton was a very capable device for its time, and was the predecessor to the modern iPhone.
