Newton MessagePad 120
Description
The Newton MessagePad 120 was originally released in the United States on January 30, 1995. It was Apple’s fourth generation of the Newton devices and featured a 20 MHz ARM 610 processor 2MB of RAM. Most notably, it was the first Newton to use the Newton 2.0 OS, which offered better handwriting recognition than previous versions. Beyond handwriting the new 2.0 OS brought auto-expanding text macros, a faster Connection Kit for backup to Mac and PC, and an Ink Text capability that added cut-and-paste and word-wrap to unconverted handwritten text. It also featured the Intelligent Assistant, which was a sort of proto-Siri that parsed written commands. Aside from these features, the Newton allowed users to communicate by fax, paging, or infrared beaming. Users could browse the internet, connect to their personal computers, track finances, take notes, and use a variety of other apps. The Newton was a very capable device for its time, and was the predecessor to the modern iPhone.
