Description

The AppleVision 1710AV Display, Model M2942, was introduced by Apple in August 1995 at the top of the AppleVision line. This 17″ Trinitron monitor has a 16.1″ viewable area, and unlike the fixed-resolution Apple monitors this one has multiple-scan, running everything from 640 x 480 up to 1280 x 1024, including the Mac sweet spots of 832 x 624, 1024 x 768, and 1152 x 870. The “AV” is what sets this one apart: it has two stereo speakers mounted on the front, a built-in PlainTalk microphone, and front-panel controls for brightness, contrast, bass, treble, and speaker/microphone mute. The five buttons on the left corner of the bezel launch the AppleVision Setup control panel on a Mac with the AppleVision software installed, which is where the geometry and DigitalColor/ColorSync calibration are handled. Video connects through the standard Macintosh DB-15 connector. That same cable also has an ADB connector that plugs into the back of the Mac, allowing you to plug your keyboard and mouse right into the monitor. There is also a sound cable permanently attached that breaks out to 3.5mm audio input and output jacks.

Do not confuse the AppleVision 1710AV (M2942) with the plain AppleVision 1710 (M2935).  The standard 1710 has no audio hardware at all, meaning no speakers, no microphone, and no bass, treble, or mute controls. This listing is for the AV model with the full multimedia feature set. For the software-driven color calibration and on-screen controls, you will want a Mac running System 7.5 or later with Apple’s AppleVision software installed. Without it the display still works, but it runs in Local mode using only the front-panel buttons.

This monitor is in overall good condition, it works well and the display looks great!  Cosmetically it may have some light discoloration in a couple areas, it has a few deep scratches on the left side and a small dent in the left speaker grille. Also the audio cable has some fraying in one spot in the middle of the cable, but this does not affect the functionality of the speakers or microphone.
