From the New York Times, October 16, 1988:
“Program-generating programs are currently at the cutting edge of software technology. Basically, the commercial versions due out in a few months are substitutes for human programmers: They construct new programs on demand, following the user’s description of the desired form and functions.
Odesta Corporation’s Double Helix II (about $595 for Macintosh) is an early example of this program type. By manipulating on-screen images, users can not only customize the program – substituting, for example, foreign-language on-screen instructions for English ones – but actually create their own programs ”from scratch.” According to Odesta, customers have used the program to manage investments, generate form letters, keep track of membership in organizations and so forth.
A programmable program is one that permits a programmer, whether professional or amateur, to customize it by specifying how it shall operate, designing customized on-screen displays and enhancing its ”built-in” functions. Most programs in this category are intended primarily for business use. For the home user, the most common application is to custom design on-screen standard forms for household budgets, phone lists and the like.”
