They started with your favorite parts of Classic Mac OS, and combined them with Open-Step a Unix system built by NeXT Computers, a company founded by Steve Jobs himself.  It features a brand new user interface called Aqua, and supports running Classic OS 9, has applications like Internet Explorer, and supports Carbon, Cocoa apps, Java 2, and more! Requires OS X 10.0.
